The reason for providing a detailed glossary of the medical words on this site is that many of the words are used only by the medical profession. Some confusion can arise when reading documents intended for the medical profession, if the medical terminology is exchanged for common words, which are believed to mean the same thing. All of the words that appear in bold text in the same colour as the main text of a page are to be found within this glossary.

Statin - A pharmaceutical preparation that is prescribed to the patient to assist them with reducing the amount of cholesterol in their body. These chemicals work by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis (the production of cholesterol by the body) by acting on the mevalonate metabolic pathway. The inhibition process affects other products which are created in the mevalonate pathway and because these products are vital to life, the patient may experience any number of serious problems.
